Under Rule 7, Section 5, Article 1 of the 2026 Official Playing Rules of the NFL (PDF page 35), the offensive team must put seven or more players on the line of scrimmage at the snap, with eligible receivers tethered to both ends of the line and every player on the line between them classified as an ineligible receiver. No offensive player may take a position neither clearly on nor clearly off the line unless lined up directly behind the snapper, with violations carrying a five-yard illegal formation penalty.
Simulated Pressures Against Five-Man Protection Slides
Those rigid offensive alignment rules give defensive coordinators a predictable five-ineligible-lineman surface to attack with simulated pressures—rushing only four players while dropping a defensive lineman into an underneath hook or rat zone and bringing a linebacker or nickel defender. By showing a six-man mugged front at the line of scrimmage and bailing two interior defenders at the snap, defenses force offensive linemen to declare a three-man slide toward defenders who drop into coverage while a slot defender attacks the quarterback’s vision lane.
Replay Official Initiations vs. Coach Challenges on High-Leverage Downs
When simulated pressures force hurried throws or strip-sacks near the sideline, Rule 15, Section 1, Articles 1 and 2 of the 2026 NFL Rulebook (PDF page 67) divide replay initiation between the head coach and the booth. While each team is permitted a minimum of two coach challenges initiated by throwing a red flag before the next legal snap or kick (and a third challenge if successful on at least one), only the Replay Official or the Senior Vice President of Officiating or his/her designee may initiate a review on plays that begin after the two-minute warning of each half, throughout any overtime period, when points are scored, on Try attempts, or when on-field officials rule an interception, an opponent fumble recovery, a fourth-down failure to reach the line to gain, kicking-team possession at the end of a kick down, or a player disqualification.
